Albert Louis Adams

Mr. Albert Louis Adams, Jr, (Al). passed away on Saturday July 13, 2024, at Beacon Place. Al was born April 27, 1932, in Southern Pines, North Carolina, son of Albert Louis Adams, Sr. and Alice Fifield Adams. He graduated from Southern Pines High School where he played varsity football and baseball. He attended NC State University, was drafted into the United States Army while at State near the end of the Korean Conflict (‘53 to ‘55). Al was assigned to the First Cavalry Division Headquarters and to the 7th Cavalry Communications Regiment. He served in Japan for almost two years. Al's sister and brother-in-law (Eleanor and Boyd Morris, who owned the Mayfair Cafeteria and was a former Mayor of Greensboro) asked Al to live with them and become assistant manager for Mayfair Cafeteria after his service in the Army. Al accepted this offer and enjoyed his tenure there for eleven years, then took a position with Rollins Supply Company that later merged with Best Distributing Company as a sales representative. In both careers, he made many friends. While at Mayfair, Al met the love of his life, Nancy Dowell, and they were married on March 16, 1956. They had one son, Albert Louis Adams III (Louis), who died unexpectedly in 2008, at the age of 46. Louis was his parents pride and joy. Al is known for his love for people and quick wit, love of family, and love of First Presbyterian church. He was involved in many church activities, and was an usher for over forty years. He was a member of First Presbyterian for seventy years. Al had many interests: astronomy, photography, golfing, dancing, swimming, Ham Radio, Boy Scout Master, and artwork. He was a very good artist and enjoyed sharing paintings with friends and family. He was a talented wood worker and created many beautiful items including hobby horses for each of his granddaughters. He was a past president of Greensboro Astronomy Club. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with school children and neighbors teaching them about the beautiful sights seen through the telescope. The children in Hamilton Forest Subdivision remember him for being the "Wolf Man" at Halloween. They loved visiting him and seeing him in his scary costume. Al was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, his son Louis, and most recently his wife of 68 years Nancy Dowell Adams who died this Spring ,on April 26, 2024. Al is survived by his grandchildren Haley Adams of San Francisco CA, Victoriana (Tori) Adams, grand son in law James Winkeler, and three great grandchildren: Veronica (Nikki) Adams, Milo Adams-Winkeler, and Emry Adams-Winkeler, all of Fairview Heights, IL.

A celebration of Al's life will be held on Wednesday, July 17, at 2:00pm, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro. Pastor Doug McLeroy and Pastor Newton Cowan will preside. A remembrance with family and friends will follow immediately after in the Virginia Gilmer Room. In his memory, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro NC, 27401. The family would like to thank the pastors, staff, and members of First Presbyterian Church for their kindness and generosity over the years; the many friends and neighbors of Hamilton Forest for your years of friendship and love; and the kind staff of Beacon Place. Al will forever be remembered as a funny, witty, kind and loving man.
