Alene Patterson Gates

Mrs. Alene “Tam” Patterson Gates, 101, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Northern Regional Hospital. Mrs. Gates was born September 15, 1920, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Escar Floyd Patterson, Sr. and Julila Whitaker Patterson. She retired from Amos and Smith Hosiery after many years of service. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Nancy Patterson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart Lowry Gates; three sisters, Mildred Jessup, Irene Carter (her twin), and Mary Ruth Booth; three brothers, Odell Patterson, Escar Floyd “Bob” Patterson, Jr., and John Patterson. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Clark Murphy and the Rev. Dennis Arrington officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 651 South South Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Face masks are recommended for the visitation and service.
