Mrs. Alma Lee Cothren Guynn, age 91 of Mount Airy, passed away Monday afternoon July 15, 2024, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Guynn was born May 31, 1933, in Grayson County, Virginia to the late Earl and Cora Elizabeth Smith Cothren. Alma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a faithful member of Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she enjoyed praising the Lord, worshiping through music, and fellowshipping with her church family. Her deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ helped her through the trials and tribulations she faced through life. She loved her family and spending time with them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alma was an avid collector of family history and genealogy; she served as a member of the Carroll Genealogical Society. Mrs. Guynn maintained a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Surviving is her husband, Jonah Guynn; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Virginia Nester, Chris Guynn; a son-in-law, Thomas Bowman; three grandchildren, three step grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several great great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Cothren Mays and Bob, Katie Cothren Dalton and David; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Guynn was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Sue Guynn Bowman; her first husband, Eldon Nester; two sisters, Wilma Lorene Cothren Ayers, Thelma Faye “Daisy” Cothren Shortt; and a brother, Douglas Mack Cothren. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Brian Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Howlett Family Cemetery in Hillsville, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 125 Chadwick Lane, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.
