Alvin C. Tolbert

Mr. Alvin C. “Al” Tolbert, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He was born February 2, 1935, in Surry County, to the late Frank and Georgia Smith Tolbert.  Al was retired as a stonecutter from North Carolina Granite Corporation after 46 years of service.  He was a volunteer fireman for Four Way Fire Department for 25 years and a member of Bannertown Baptist Church.  Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Margaret Welch Tolbert; four nieces, Susan Tolbert, Kathy Gunter, Kay East, and Judy Murray; six nephews, Steve Boyd, Bill Boyd, Van Boyd (Crystal), Charles Murray, Bill Murray (Helen), Kyle Murray (Donna); three sisters-in-law, Pat Kinney, Gail Welch, and Jerrie Welch; a brother-in-law, Lynn Cook; a “special family friend,” Marilyn Thornton; numerous nieces and nephews from the Welch family; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Tolbert was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Margaret “Cindy” Tolbert; a son, Quinn Alan Tolbert; two sisters, Ruth Tolbert Watson and Helen Tolbert Vipperman; and a brother, Grady Tolbert.  The funeral service will be held Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mickey Cogdill officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
