Alvin Harvey Gammons

Mr. Alvin Harvey Gammons, 82, of 120 Washington Street, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at his home. Mr. Gammons was born June 13, 1926, in Surry County, son of the late Thomas and Susie Hicks Gammons. He retired from Bassett Furniture Company and was a veteran of the United States Army. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Ricky Kirkman and Sandra and Sam Cox, all of Mount Airy; a son, Jeff Gammons of Mount Airy; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Inez Smith of Mount Airy; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Lois Gammons, Wayne and Ruth Gammons, and Dennis and Jessie Gammons, all of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gammons was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Simmons Gammons; a daughter, Wanda Sue Gammons; a son, Donnie Gammons; a grandson, Derrick Gammons; a sister, Bessie Morrison; and two brothers, Randall Gammons and Walter Gammons. A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Slate Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tim Gammons. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home.
