Mr. Alvin Poteat, 79, of Lowgap, died at his home on Friday, May 6, 2022. He was born December 4, 1942, in Pike County, KY, to the late William Calloway Poteat and Elizabeth Flannery Poteat. Alvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita Poteat Hawks and Jimmy and Norma Poteat Mullins and John; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert Poteat and Angela and Anthony Poteat; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Dale Hawks, Jr., Amanda Hawks, Matthew Mullins, Brandy Mullins, Erica Mullins, Brandy Collins, Jacob Parrish, and Katasha Coins; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Wanda Poteat Conner and Larry and Shirley Poteat Hawks; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Poteat was preceded in the death by his wife, Zeta Canney Poteat; five sisters, Brenda Poteat Allen, Mary Poteat Beasley, Oma Poteat Bryant, Lillian Poteat Chandler, and Diane Poteat Edwards; three brothers, Richard Poteat, James Poteat, and Billy Poteat. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Indian Grove Family Cemetery, with Pastor Winston Davis officiating. No formal visitation will be held. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the compassion and care given to Mr. Poteat during his illness. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
