Alvin Ray Smith

Mr. Alvin Ray Smith, 74, of Cana, VA, passed away Saturday morning, December 9, 2023, at his home.  Mr. Smith was born August 3, 1949, in Carroll County, VA, one of thirteen children born to the late Carl and Flora Elizabeth Boyd Smith.  Alvin retired from Bassett Furniture after many years of service.  He is survived by a son, Kevin Smith; a grandchild; a sister, Bettie Watts; two brothers, William “Bill” Smith and Jack Smith; two sisters-in-law, Susie Smith and Mamie Smith; a brother-in-law, Oscar Combs; many nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Smith Combs; eight brothers and three sisters-in-law, Milton Carl and Elsie Smith, Jesse Kyle Smith, Donald D. Smith, James Lee and Frances Smith, Raleigh Swanson and Mable Smith, Hassell Gene Smith, Calvin Gray Smith, and Clarence Arthur Smith; and a brother-in-law, Turner Watts.  The funeral service will be held Friday, December 15, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jason Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mount Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
