Andrew Davis Smith

Mr. Andrew Davis Smith, Age 82, of Mt. Airy passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Smith was born July 20, 1932 in Surry County to the late Kelly Roosevelt and Mable Jarvis Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher until his health declined. He was the fire chief for the Franklin Community Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was co-founder of the Franklin Youth Foundation. Mr. Smith was the former District Manager of Exxon Propane Gas, Tropi Gas and was retired from Carolane Propane Gas. Mr. Smith was one of the original members of the Mellotone Quartet and the Reflections. Surviving is his wife of 61 years Mrs. Annie Laurie Marion Smith of the home, one daughter and son-in-law Jan Smith Whitaker and husband Leon of Mt. Airy, one son and daughter-in-law David and Karen Smith of Mt. Airy, five grandchildren Shannon and Joey Collins of Mt. Airy, Shawn and Amanda Whitaker of Sparta, Chad and Leigh Ann Smith of Mt. Airy, Tracy and Brian Snow of Dobson and Justin Smith of Mt. Airy, eight great grandchildren Kara Collins, Sara Collins, Kaci Collins, Olivia Whitaker, Macey Whitaker, Elijah Smith, Ava Smith and Madison Snow. In addition to his parents Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law Nellie and Posey Marion and by a brother-in-law Cecil Marion. Funeral services will be held Monday January 12, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Highland Park Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev. Darrell Tate and Rev. Eddie Honeycutt with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday night 6 to8 P.M. at Highland Park Baptist Church. His body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Highland Park Baptist Church building fund, 1327 Grove Lane Mt.
