Ann Boyles Powers

Ms. Ann Boyles Powers, 79, of Indianapolis, IN, went home to be with her heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Clearvista Lake Health Campus.  She was a loving mother and grandmother, affectionately called “Grandma Ann” by her family.  As a longtime member of a bluegrass band, Ann sang and played tenor banjo and tenor guitar.  She never met a stranger, and she loved making music with anyone who was willing.  One of her favorite things to do was to sit around a campfire with her family and friends, playing cards, telling stories, and singing bluegrass.  Ms. Powers was born February 27, 1943, in Surry County, to the late Julius Carlyle “J.C.” and Ruth Roberts Boyles.  Ann grew up in Patrick County, VA, and graduated from Blue Ridge High School.  She was a faithful member of Pleasant View Baptist Church until she moved to King.  In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Boyles; her sister, Betsy Brown; and two very special aunts, Annie Boyles and Ima Boyles.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Becky Critz of Mount Airy; her daughter and son-in-law, Suzan and John Cannon of Indianapolis, IN; and five grandchildren, Waverly Cannon, Griffin Cannon, and Jack Cannon, all of Indianapolis, IN, and Ryan Critz and his wife, Lena, and Austin Critz, all of Mount Airy.  Ann is also survived by her sisters, Mary Owens and Connie Slate, both of Mount Airy; her brother, Richard Boyles of Claudville, VA; and several nieces and nephews.  A private family service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy, with Dr. Roger B. Gilbert officiating.  No formal visitation will be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Surry Animal Rescue at P.O. Box 981, Mount Airy, NC  27030 or online at https://www.surryanimalrescue.org/info/donateMoody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
