Anne Lee (Mooney) Chilton

July 24, 1945 — July 11, 2022

Pilot Mountain

Annie Lee Mooney Chilton, 76, known as Anne to her friends, traded every sorrow and sickness for the glory of eternal Heaven on Monday, July 11, 2022.  She battled ovarian cancer with the same determination and gusto she brought to every other challenge in life and now she is enjoying her rewards. Born July 24, 1945 to Jim and Dorothy Mooney, as a young girl Anne cooked for the family and tended to the babies and learned to do without a lot of creature comforts. And then she dedicated the rest of her life to taking care of other people – neighbors, friends, and family. If there was a need, she worked to meet it, most often quietly and without applause. Never one to desire possessions or status, over the years Anne served in her church in WMU, as VBS director and on various teams of NC Baptists on Mission Disaster Relief and Student Ministries. She managed an untold number of community fundraisers for Ararat Long Hill Ruritan Club and Ararat Volunteer Fire Department, hemmed pants for most all her pastors and catered to her loving husband, helping him on the farm. She loved being able to bless her children and grandchildren. Over the past couple of years she took great pride in the title “Chief Stake Inspector” of NC Survey Supply.  Anne enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, sewing and blessing people with home cooking. When her children were young, she drove a school bus and worked in the school cafeteria, because that allowed her to keep the same hours as her children. And at work, she took care of other children like her own, making sure to discipline when needed and to pay for ice cream so the less fortunate kids didn’t feel left out. She and Kenneth were married for over 51 years and, especially in the past few years, they were blessed to be able to travel, but she was always ready to return home.  Anne was preceded to Heaven by her siblings, baby Pauline and “Little David;” her parents, who she took care of through their lengthy illnesses; her unborn children and Rev. Jeff Stephens, her son-in-law who was more son than in-law.  Those left with beautiful memories of Anne include her loving husband, Kenneth; her children, Sharon (Brian) Moser, Becky Stephens, Tim (Mindy) Chilton and two beautiful granddaughters, Maria Chilton (Kamron) and Sarah Stephens; sister, Mary (David) Johnson and brothers Dewey (Janie) Mooney and Warren (Barbara) Mooney, special nieces and nephews, and her dear friend, Juanita Moser. Two spoiled dogs, Rocky and Sabra, already miss their mama who got a kick out of feeding them bites of peanut butter sandwiches and hot dogs.  The family will receive friends Friday, July 15 at Simmons Grove Baptist Church, 443 Simmons Grove Church Road, Pilot Mountain, beginning at 12:30pm. Immediately following, a homegoing celebration will begin at 2pm; graveside service to follow at the Simmons Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Rev. Alan Branch and Rev. Stewart Mauck officiating.  Anne’s life of humble service pointed others to Jesus. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider sharing a donation to support Pilot Mountain Rescue & EMS, INC., PO Box 743, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041 as they also dedicate themselves to serving others. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
