Mr. Arnold Wayne Simpson, 75, of 108 Oak Haven Trail, Dobson, departed this life Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mr. Simpson was born August 4, 1932, in Surry County, to the late Sam Wesley and Lula Wood Simpson. Wayne graduated from White Plains High School in 1951. During his school days, he loved playing baseball and was a member of the White Plains and Fairview baseball teams. His teammates considered him a valuable "lefty" pitcher. Wayne served in the United States Air Force following the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated White Pine Nursery and Landscaping for many years and was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sylvia White Simpson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Chico Zurita of Dobson; a son, Nelson Clark Simpson; three precious grandchildren, Santana Zurita, Jacob Zurita, and Kailei Zurita, all of Dobson; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ruth Kimmer and Debra and John Whitt, all of Mocksville, and Jo Ann Brooks of Hamptonville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Homer and Ila Simpson of Biscoe and Harry Simpson of Hamptonville; and many special friends, including Jimmy Stewart, Billy Driver, Harvey Wishon, and Clinton and Maxine Dockery. In addition to his parents, Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by a brother, Troy Simpson; an infant brother, Raymond Simpson; and a special friend, Vess Phillips. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Mount Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Hubert "Bud" Wishon and the Rev. Jimmy Pardue. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to the Mount Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Alvin Hardy, 1312 Chandler Road, Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and Dr. Linda Shuck and her staff at Carolina Heart Care for their love, care, and concern during Wayne's illness.
