Mrs. Arretta Lyons Norman, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Norman was born November 4, 1936, in Carroll County, VA, one of eleven children born to the late Charles Lloyd and Julia Mary Jarrell Lyons. Arretta retired as a driver license examiner from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles after many years of dedicated service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and often attended New Hope Baptist Church, where her nephew served as pastor. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Keith Seivers of Mount Airy; a son and two daughters-in-law, Bill Norman, Jr. and Sheri Norman of Mount Airy and Sylvia Amaro Norman Windham of Richardson, TX; her grandchildren, Cody and Dani Norman, Caitlin and Patrick Frazier, Kelsey Norman, Nicole Norman, Brooke Norman, and Peyton Marvin; her bonus grandchildren, Sara George, Rebecca and Levi Hall, Mikayla Seivers, and Abigail Windham; her great-grandchildren, Gavin Michael Frazier and Evie Grace Frazier; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Margaret and Lowell Layman and Mary Lyons Parsons, all of Mount Airy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, G.C. Lyons of Emerald Isle, Fred and Betty Lyons of Hendersonville, and Ruth Lyons of Sylva; many beloved nieces and nephews; and an adopted son and his wife, Richard “Wigs” and Marcy Wigeri Van Edema. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Norman, Sr.; a son, Michael Todd Norman; a sister, Lois Lyons; and five brothers, Arwood Lyons, Lloyd Elmo Lyons, Dewey Lyons, Charles Clancy Lyons, and Thomas Reavis Lyons. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin and the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the church. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care and compassion shown by the staff at the Skilled Nursing Unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County, the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, and her special caregivers, especially Linda Surratt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Skilled Nursing Unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County, 830 Rockford Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; or Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
