Mr. Arthur Franklin Carter age 85 of 409 Farmbrook Road, Mount Airy, husband of Virginia Brannock Carter passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Surry Community Nursing Center. Mr. Carter was born in the Brim community section in Surry County on February 7, 1922 son of the late James Walter Carter and Evelyn Spencer Carter and was 1940 graduate of Mount Airy High School and was arts editor for the school newspaper the Hi Spots. Mr. Carter served in the Army-Air Forces during WWII and after making fourteen missions over Germany was missing in action and was a POW for one year. Sgt. Carter was armor and left waist gunner of the 8th Air Force Fying Fortress. He received various medals and the Air Medal. After coming home from service he was employed at Mount Airy Chair until 1952 and at United Technology (Carolina Plastics) for 34 years until his retirement. He served the Franklin Ruritan Club three times as president and was also vice president and treasurer and was a member for over 30 years. He loved softball and was at the top of the Big Ten Hitters Industrial softball league. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Brannock Carter of the home; one son, Arthur Randall Carter of the home and one brother, Leslie Eugene Carter of Mount Airy; sisters-in-law, Vivian Thompson and husband Brian of Cleveland, TN, Lynn Childress and husband Lee of Mount Airy, Ethel Brannock of Mount Airy and Katherine Brannock of Mount Airy; brothers-in-law, Mitchell Brannock and wife Teresa of Mount Airy, Jerry Brannock of Mount Airy and Ralph Brannock and wife Ann of Greenville, SC, special niece, Betty Faye Edwards of Mount Airy and numerous other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Mr. Carter was preceded in death by sisters, Mae Byrd, Grace Stewart and Sally Pruitt and a brother, James A. "Red" Carter. A graveside service will be held on Monday November 5, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens. Chaplain Thurmond Midkiff will be the speaker. Full military rites will be conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the donor's choice. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Sunday night from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
