Mr. Arthur Lee Hawks, 67, of 1197 Red Brush Road, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 5, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Hawks was born September 18, 1942, in Carroll County, VA, son of the late Edgar Eugene Hawks, Sr. and Annie Mae Akers Hawks. Arthur was self-employed for many years and attended Cana Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Launia Burnette Marshall Hawks of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Ronnie Jessup, Sr. of Mount Airy; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jerry Hawks and Weldon and Alice Hawks, all of Ararat, VA, and Barry and Nickole Hawks of Mount Airy; three stepdaughters and their spouses, Tammy and John Reynolds and Toni and Mike Nester, all of Mount Airy, and Crissy and Scotty Prevette of Roaring River; two stepsons, Jimmy Watson and Ric Marshall and his wife, Denise Pardue, all of Ararat, NC; seven grandchildren; twelve stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gracie and Herman Sechrist of Seagrove, Elza and J.D. Bowman of Ararat, VA, and Bonnie and Claude Gwyn of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Marlie and Bertie Hawks of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by two wives, Arlene Tucker Hawks Heller and Carol Meredith Hawks; a stepdaughter, Lisa Watson; a granddaughter, Olivia Hawks; a sister, Edith Hawks Combs; and three brothers, Edgar Eugene Hawks, Jr., Claucy Hawks, and Arlis Hawks. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 8, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Cana Baptist Church, with the Rev. Russell Vass and the Rev. Marlie Hawks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Cana Baptist Church, c/o Eddie Willard, 101 Leonhardt Drive, Cana, VA 24317.
