Arthur Henry Johnson, Jr

Mr. Arthur Henry Johnson, Jr., 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 3, 2017, at Duke University Hospital in Durham. Mr. Johnson was born December 14, 1931, in Harford County, MD, one of eleven children born to the late Arthur Henry Johnson, Sr. and Virginia Catherine Freeman Johnson. Arthur served our country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict era (1950-1953). He retired as a telecommunications technician from Dominion Resources after many years of service and was a faithful member of White Plains Friends Meeting. Affectionately known as Art to his family and friends, he loved his church, music, making jelly, and prize-winning counted cross-stitch. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy Margaret Thompson Johnson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Vanessa and Dr. David Steiner of Aiken, SC; two sons, Kevin Johnson and his special friend, Allison Skillman, of Mount Airy and Sterling Johnson of Mount Airy and his fiancée, SheilaMarie Ermac, of Cebu, Philippines; his grandchildren, Chad Steiner and Alex Steiner, both of Aiken, SC, Jeremy Steiner of Atlanta, GA, and Rachel and CPT Ryan Shealy of Cayce, SC; two great-grandchildren, Leo Shealy and Kaleia Shealy, both of Cayce, SC; a sister-in-law, Audrey “A.J.” Cain of Claudville, VA; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Tawney Nannette Johnson Bishop; six sisters, Catherine Minter, Gladys Bauman, Helen Shumate, Cecilia Sills, Hazel Smith, and Rosa Lee Blackiston; and four brothers, Ray Johnson, Emmitt Johnson, Jim Johnson, and Warren Johnson. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 2:00 PM at White Plains Friends Meeting, with Pastor Jake Penley officiating. Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to White Plains Friends Meeting, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the family.
