Mr. Artie Cord Kirkman, 86, of Mount Airy, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Kirkman was born October 2, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Romie and Lillie Belton Kirkman. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart for tremendous bravery. Mr. Kirkman was a member of the Shelton Church of the Brethren. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Dalmer Chilton of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Treva Kirkman of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kirkman was preceded in death by his loving wife, Madia Lawson Kirkman; and six brothers, Cecil Kirkman, Blackie Kirkman, Hersie Kirkman, Treva Krikman, Carl Kirkman, and Dink Kirkman. An entombment service will be conducted at 3:30 PM Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, by Chaplain Thurmand Midkiff, the Rev. Todd E. Byrd, and the Rev. Rusty Reed. Full military rites will be conducted during the service by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
