Athalene McMillian Owens

Mrs. Athalene McMillian Owens, 83, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Owens was born September 15, 1924, in Carroll County, VA, to John and Rhoda Burcham McMillian. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Mike Edmonds, Linda and Ronnie Dean, and Arlene and Dickie Hull, all of Mount Airy, and Wanda and Tony Snow of King; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild on the way; and a brother and two sisters-in-law, Olen and Billy Nell McMillian of Cana, VA, and Bertie McMillian of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee McMillian; her second husband, Franklin Junior Owens; a son, Johnny "J. C" McMillian; a sister, Alice Angel; and four brothers, Shirley, Elmer, Emmett and Wayne McMillian. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Cana, VA. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Emmett Crotts, the Rev. Kelly Boyd, Richard Sawyers, and Tony Snow. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the church, where Mrs. Owens will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Shirley Jessup of Mountain Valley Hospice for the love and care shown to Mrs. Owens during her illness.
