Avanelle "Sis" Elder

Mrs. Avanelle “Sis” Johnson Elder, 92, of Mt. Airy passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Surry Community Health and Rehab.  Mrs. Elder was born in Surry County on November 4, 1926 to the late James Howard and Thelma Hennis Johnson.  She loved playing golf with her friends, and was an excellent Artist.  Mrs. Elder was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Airy, and a member of the Rebekah Sunday School Class.  She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sheri Ritsick and Ron; a son and daughter-in-law, James Franklin Elder, Jr. and Betty; grandchildren, Evan Ritsick, Colin and wife Natalie Ritsick, Natalya Coulon, Alexander Elder.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Elder was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Elder; and a brother, Hugh Carlyle Johnson.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with the Rev. Jay Meadows officiating.  There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 N. Main St., Mt.
