Barbara Lee (Murray) Carter

Mrs. Barbara Lee Murray Carter, age 80, of Mount Airy passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mount Airy.  Mrs. Carter was born August 26, 1943, in Patrick County, Virginia to the late Cecil Murray and Hattie Hawks Murray Gammons.  Barbara was a strong loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.  She always put her children and grandchildren first and thus became a homemaker.  She was married to the late Billy Edward Carter for 49 years before he lost his battle with ALS.  Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, Doug Carter and Melissa of Lambsburg, VA; eleven grandchildren, Mickey Creed and Erin, Pepper Galyean and Chris, Colby Luckado, Josh Edwards and Keisha, Charity Edwards, Maggie Miller and Josh, Ethen Carter and Kristi, Haley Carter , Macy Carter, Brooke Livengood and Brett, Jace Bowman; fifteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Brenda Sue Murray Durst; three brothers, Carl “Toots” Murray, Dennis Gammons, Mike Gammons; many nieces and nephews; and her special companions, Leilee and Fatboy.  In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by three daughters, Brenda Lee Carter Creed, Sandy Dee Carter Edwards, Patsy Elaine Carter Bowman; one son, Billy Wade Carter; twin sister, Bobbie Murray; and a brother, Larry Rayburn Murray.  A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Faith Baptist Church in Mount Airy with Reverend Randy Edwards officiating.  The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 23,2023, at Faith Baptist Church from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.  The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the special companions’ caregivers, Christopher and Lane “Lanie” Galyean as well as the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and Harbor View Nursing Center.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.
