Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother who will be missed by all that knew and loved her. Barbara was born on March 29, 1931, in Surry County to the late George Lee and Celestine Vernon Shelton. Barbara loved vegetable gardening and often shared her garden’s abundance with neighbors, family, and friends. She was a faithful member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church for 58 years serving on the administrative board, finance committee, Sunday School teacher, and lay leader. Barbara was a graduate of Franklin High School in the class of 1950. During her senior year of high school, she attended a senior trip to Washington DC, there she met a classmate, Glenn Macey, who became her friend and on August 25, 1951, became her husband. She and her late husband Glenn were faithful volunteers in the community and enjoyed visiting shut-in members of their church. Barbara was a childcare provider for many years at Blackburn’s Nursery and Daycare. Left to cherish her memory are one son, Steven Edward (Janet) Macey of Mount Airy; daughters and son-in-law, Lisa Macey Hughes, and Rhonda Leigh Macey (Benji) Hiatt all of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Tosha (Tony) Speaks of Pilot Mountain, Laken Hughes and fiancé Nik Morgan of Concord, Tonya (Brantley) Smith of King, Bradley (Sarah) Macey of Raleigh, and Matthew (Danielle) Osborne of King; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobbie (Wayne) Creed, Linda Voncannon, and Bill Macey; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Macey was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Glenn Edward Macey; son-in-law, Brady Hughes, Jr.; and eleven brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 2:00 PM in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with burial to follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.
