Mrs. Barbara June Tolbert Younger, age 86, of Mount Airy, stepped into her heavenly home and met her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday , January 13, 2025, at Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy. She was born on February 13, 1938, in Surry County, to the late Howard Burton Tolbert and Ida Frances Moser Tolbert. She attended Mount Airy High School, Class of 1955 where she sang in the Glee Club (one of her joys).
Growing up in a musical family, Barbara started singing at an early age in church. She would often accompany her father who sang bass with the Friendly Four Quartet as they traveled to area churches. He would often allow her to sing solos. Using her God-given talents, Barbara also learned to play the piano. When the church purchased an organ to add to their piano accompaniment, they chose her as organist. Barbara is a member of Union Hill Friends Church in Mt. Airy where she sang in the choir and blessed the congregation with her rich and full alto solos. Her radiant smile and warm, loving nature endeared her to many throughout her life.
In 1954 Barbara met the love of her life, Theodore “Pete” Younger. They were married on December 19, 1954 and soon started a family as they worked side by side on the Younger tobacco farm. Within 10 years, their family of four children was complete.
The early 1970’s brought a renewal of one on Barbara’s life goals, to complete her GED and attend Surry Community College. She received her CNA certification and quickly put it to use at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Her favorite area to work in was the nursery where she lovingly cared for newborns, just as she had her four children. What a Joy!! Later she became “Granny” to Justin, Zane, and Ryelee, and kept them in her home as babies and toddlers. Her love and influence on them will last their lifetimes.
Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Younger and her half-sister, Kathryn Tolbert Collins. Surviving are her children, Fonda Younger of Mt. Airy , Rhonda Younger and her spouse Penny Stewart of Burlington; sons, Trent Younger and spouse Brian Tilley of Mt. Airy, Jamie Younger of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Justin Banner of Burlington, Zane Younger of Winston-Salem, Ryelee Younger of Mt. Airy; half-brothers, Gary and Marc Tolbert; sisters-in-law, Patricia “Trish” Younger, and Janice Younger both of Mt. Airy; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friend, Betty Ausburn of Mt. Airy.
