Barney Burkhart

Mr. Barney W. Burkhart, 87, of Pinnacle, passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Wednesday, August 11, 2021. He was born in Patrick County, VA, to the late Johnny W. and Alice Pell Burkhart. Mr. Burkhart bravely served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Renfro Corporation after many years of service. Mr. Burkhart was of the Baptist faith, serving in several churches during his life in many roles, Sunday school teacher, deacon, youth leader, choir member and also, he sang with a couple of quartets. Most recently he was a member of Westfield Baptist Church. Mr. Burkhart volunteered with the Ararat Virginia Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Burkhart will be fondly remembered by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Hazel Smith Burkhart; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Allan Lowe, Rhonda Hooker, and Patsy and David Chesnut; grandchildren, Tonya Rippey, Bradley Easter, Alison Hooker, Katie Hooker Thomas, Kyle Hamlin, Chloe Hamlin Guevara; step grandchildren, Wayne Lowe, Chris Lowe and Josh Chesnut; six great grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Nellie Montgomery and Pamela and Jim Griffin; brothers, Robey and Bobby Burkhart; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burkhart was preceded in death by a son-in-law Tony Hooker; a sister Hester Culler; a brother Fred Burkhart; and a brother-in-law Robert Montgomery. A funeral service will be held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy, at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 13, 2021, with Rev. Wes McGarry officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 pm until the time service. Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum with full military honors by VFW Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.
