Mr. Benjamin Franklin Bolick, Jr., 80, of White Plains, passed away peacefully at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy on Wednesday night, July 26, 2017. Mr. Bolick was born May 17, 1937, in Caldwell County, to the late Benjamin Franklin and Docia Harrison Bolick. Ben was a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher’s College, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in math and a master’s degree in education. After moving from Boone in 1958, he served as a math teacher for two years and principal for 32 years at White Plains Elementary School, where every child that passed through the doors knew he cared about them. Mr. Bolick also made a lasting impact on his community through his many years of charitable service. As a member of White Plains Friends Meeting, he was active with the “Quaker Men” and served on Ministry and Counsel for many years. He set a strong Christian example for the men in his community. He spent 32 years as a member of the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department and was also a member of the White Plains Ruritan Club. In addition to his time as a teacher, Ben also found the time to coach Pony League baseball teams and summer league softball teams in White Plains. Ben was truly known as a kind and generous man, contributing to the White Plains community often and always lending a helping hand to neighbors and strangers alike. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Brintle Bolick; his son, Frank Bolick and his special friend, Tracie Hedrick; his daughter, Katie Bolick; his grandchildren, Daniel Surratt and his wife, Anna Johnston Surratt (great-grandchild number 2 on the way) and Jessica Bolick Cockerham and her husband, Jeremiah Cockerham; a great-grandchild, Benjamin Cockerham; and four great-stepgrandchildren, Breana, Nathaniel, Jordan, and Makayla Cockerham. He is also survived by two sisters, Nadine Bolick Williard of White Plains and Cleo Bolick Cook and her husband, Hugh, of Boone; a sister-in-law, Mildred Templeton Bolick of Charlotte; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bolick was preceded in death by three sisters, Christine Bolick Harmon, Colene Alice Bolick, and Cleda Bolick Graham; three brothers, Clyde Bolick, Cloyd Bolick, and Coy Bolick; and his special mother-in-law, Kate "Mema" Jones Brintle. A service of worship and celebration of Mr. Bolick’s life will be held Sunday, July 30, 2017, at 2:00 PM at White Plains Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Jake Penley officiating.
