Mrs. Bernice Evans Hanes, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, at Oak Forest Health and Rehab Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Hanes was born August 22, 1917, in Davidson County, to Joe M. and Maggie Ripple Evans. Mrs. Hanes was a member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church. She also attended Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a proud member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hanes retired in 1980 from Highland Park Day Care. She leaves behind to cherish her loving memory a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Fred Hughes of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Chris Estes and wife, Wendy, and Mickey Estes, all of Mount Airy; and four great-grandchildren, Holly Estes, Morgan Estes, Casey Estes, and Maggie Estes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hanes was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph "Bill" Hanes, Jr., whom she married in 1946; and three sisters, Beulah Koontz, Delyla Kimel, and Mary Holt; and three brothers, Marvin Evans, Junius Evans, and Frank Evans. The funeral service will be held Sunday, May 24, 2009, at 4:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Tim Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, c/o Golden Circle Sunday School Class, 304 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
