Mr. Bernie Ray Sutphin, Sr., 88, of Lowgap, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Alleghany Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. He was born October 11, 1921, in Surry County, to the late Nicholas Hugh and Susie Haymore Sutphin. He was a retired farmer and a member of Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mount Airy. Mr. Sutphin is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ruth and Bobby Matthews of Mount Airy and Lougenia and Alvin Smith of Lowgap; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernie Ray Sutphin, Jr. and Sharon Sutphin and Nicky and Rika Sutphin, all of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutphin was preceded in death by his wife, Polly T. Sutphin; four sisters, Bessie Sutphin, Hazel McMillian, Irene Barber, and Mary Hensley; and six brothers, Abner Sutphin, George Sutphin, Elbert Sutphin, Garnett Sutphin, Herbert Sutphin, and Grady Sutphin. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 20, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. David Sparks and the Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Midkiff Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, 120 Pentecostal Holiness Church Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
