Mrs. Bertha Mae Newman Coulson, 83, of 350 Welch Road, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Coulson was born April 29, 1927, in Coalwood, WV, to the late Claude Turner and Lizzie Cagle Newman. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Coulson was a member of Mayberry Baptist Church and a founding member of Community Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Thornton of Lexington, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Lisa Tolbert of New Castle, VA, and David and Jamy Coulson of Georgetown, IN; eight grandchildren, Kelly Tolbert, Karolyn Slusser, Joshua Jones, Jason Tolbert, Jonathon Tolbert, Corey Tolbert, Caitlin Huffman, and Erin Coulson; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon Henderson Tolbert, Dillon Yopp, Shannon Yopp, Alexis Brown, Hayli Huffman, Eli Tolbert, Christopher Slusser, and Megan Slusser; three sisters, Anita Mosley of Mount Airy, Ella Mitchell of Goose Creek, SC, and Wilner Purdy of Hampton, VA; and two brothers, Monroe Newman of Mount Airy and Dillard Newman of Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Coulson was preceded in death by her husband, David Howard Coulson; a sister, Vernell Wilson; and three brothers, Raymith Newman, Porter Newman, and C.L. Newman. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 1:00 PM at Mayberry Baptist Church, with Dr. Craig Edwards and the Rev. Arlis Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Community Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
