Mrs. Bertha Virginia Nichols Hodges, 92, of 147 Galyean Street, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Hodges was born September 29, 1917, in Alleghany County, to the late William and Laurel Joines Nichols. She was a homemaker and a member of Shining Light Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Zula Goins of Mount Airy and Diane and Ronald Wood of Lowgap; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Faye Hodges and Jim and Carolyn Hodges, all of Mount Airy, and Mack and Nelda Hodges of Woodleaf; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Josie Nichols of Cana, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Jahue Hodges; four grandchildren, Randy Hodges, Bobby Nelson, Deonna Hiatt, and Michael Hodges; a great-great-grandchild, Anikan Goins; four sisters, Florence Brinkley, Bertie Nichols, Nan Nichols, and Vertie Slate; and thee brothers, Walter Nichols, Leff Nichols, and Sam Nichols. A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Ennice, with the Rev. Elmo Hiatt officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express a "special thanks" to a granddaughter, Debbie Hodges, for all the special care extended to Mrs. Hodges.
