Bertie Ayers McMillian

Mrs. Bertie Ayers McMillian, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. McMillian was born September 14, 1928, in Carroll County, VA, to the late William Norman Ayers and Elsie Litha Ayers Ayers. Bertie worked for many years at Spencer's Inc. and was a homemaker. Mrs. McMillian was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was a loving mother, who was also considered a "mom" to many other children. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers. She is survived by her three sons, Weldon McMillian, Clifford Bing McMillian, Edward Eric McMillian, and Archie Dean McMillian, all of Mount Airy; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lina Crotts of Cana, VA, and Hallie Prillaman of Henry, VA; and a half brother, Rufus Ayers of Hillsville, VA. Mrs. Ayers was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett McMillian; her parents, William Norman Ayers and Elsie Litha Ayers Kilgore; three sisters, Lissie Ayers, Massey Gwynn, and Gracie Gwynn; a brother, Mullen Ayers; and two half-brothers, Jerry Ayers and Newel Ayers. The funeral service will held Sunday, August 29, 2010, at 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Isreal Gwyn officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 until 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
