Mrs. Betty June Watson Chilton, 89, of Ararat, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022, at Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy. Mrs. Chilton was born May 21, 1932, in Surry County, one of five children born to the late Coley Willis and Annie Alice Johnson Watson. Betty retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and was a member of Friendly Chapel Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Paul Simmons of Ararat; three grandchildren, Nick Sechrist, Lisa Adams, and Dena Cain; five great-grandchildren, Kasey Harris, Kayla Sechrist, Breanna Largen, Steven Flinchum, and Angel Hedrick; a sister, Peggy Fowler of Ararat; several nieces and nephews, Patsy Eakes, Louise Watkins, Denise Brady, Tammy Reynolds, Ricky Watson, Benny Watson, and Jimmy Watson; and a special friend and caregiver, Don Childress. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chilton was preceded in death by her husband, J. Sanford Chilton; a sister, Belvin Watson Booth; two brothers, Junior Willis Watson and Arlis Loxley Watson; a niece, Karen Lisa Watson; and a nephew, Elbert Hassell Watson, Jr. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Oakdale Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Watson officiating. No formal visitation will be held. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
