Betty Ray Loflen Frye

Mrs. Betty Ray Loflen Frye, of Elkin, NC, and Westfield, MA, joined her husband, the Rev. Hassell Frye, in their heavenly home on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Betty was born May 23, 1923, in Mount Airy, NC, one of three children of Dillard Wilson Loflen and Jettie Irene Moody. She was proud of her family heritage, being a direct descendent of Pleasant B. Moody, one of the early settlers of Surry County, NC, and Ruel Moody, who fought in the Civil War and also voted in the first election in Mount Airy. Betty graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1940 and worked at the telephone company before marrying Hassell Frye in 1943. They had a son, Hassell Frye, Jr., and moved to Elkin, NC, where her husband played semi-pro baseball for Chatham's. Betty worked as secretary at the First Methodist Church and also at Radio Station WIFM in Elkin before becoming a full time pastor's wife when her husband was ordained as minister in 1961. Betty enjoyed working with the pre-schoolers in the numerous churches they served. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years and a sister-in-law, Martha Loflen. Survivors include her son, Hassell A. Frye, Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Westfield, MA; two brothers, Lester A. Loflen and wife, Kathryn, of Columbia, SC, and Dillard Wade Loflen of Mount Airy, NC; two granddaughters, Caroline M. Babinski and husband, Jason, of Westfield, MA, and Cynthia R. Gilbert and husband, James, of Enfield, CT; and six great-grandchildren, David Crichton, Cory Babinski, Adrian Crichton, Kayce Babinski, Kayla Gilbert, and James Gilbert, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her two doggies, Lucky and Sandy. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 2:00 PM at the Moody-Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Dobson, with the Rev. James Holbrook officiating. Interment will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens on Highway 21 in State Road, NC. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
