Mrs. Betty Prevette Godwin, 93, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Betty was born March 4, 1921, in Statesville, the daughter of John Prevette and Letitia Yost Prevette, and was raised in Asheboro. She graduated in 1941 from Women's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Betty was a longtime resident of Roanoke Rapids and a teacher for over 30 years, retiring in 1985 from the Roanoke Rapids City Schools. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, serving the church in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Godwin. She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Manieri and her husband, Ray, of Mount Airy; a son, John Godwin and his wife, Donna, of Garner; five grandchildren, John Manieri of Newark, NJ, Elizabeth Manieri of Austin, TX, Morgan Helmeid and her husband, Bobby, of Clymer, PA, and Rian Sommer and Wyatt Godwin, both of Garner; and a great-granddaughter, Parker Helmeid, of Clymer, PA. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Village Care of King, a skilled nursing facility, for the excellent care provided to Betty in her final years, as well as to the staff of the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 20, 2014, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
