Ms. Betty Lou Hall Howell, 76, of 427 County Line Road, Cana, VA, passed away Tuesday evening, July 30, 2013, at her home. Ms. Howell was born January 4, 1937, in Carroll County, VA, the daughter of the late Samson and Pauline Weddle Hall. Betty, affectionately known as "Nanny B," was a devoted homemaker and retired from Spencer's Inc. She was a member of Willow Hill Moravian Church. She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Diane and C.T. Cuthbertson of Warrenton, VA, Kimberly and Gary Sechrist, Jenifer Henderson, and Lisa and Steve Tilley, all of Cana, VA, and Kay and John Amway of Yukon, OK; a special granddaughter and caregiver, Ashley (Ryan) McMillian of Mount Airy; ten additional grandchildren, David Dalton, Chad (Carrie) Hiatt, Bradley (Tammy) Sechrist, Patrick Sechrist, Liana Sechrist, Saira Henderson, and Riley Henderson, all of Cana, VA, Michele Dalton of Centreville, VA, and Amanda Amway and James Amway, both of Yukon, OK; two special great-grandchildren, Camrey McMillian and Kenzey McMillian, both of Mount Airy; five additional great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Hallie Bates of Mount Airy and Patricia and Randy Utt of Cana, VA; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Sue Hall of Cana, VA; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and neighbor, Guy Hiatt of Cana, VA. In addition to her parents, Ms. Howell was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Hiatt; a sister, Edith Smith; and a brother, Freddie Hall. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 2, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jerry Keegan officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by Lisa Speas and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Misty Easter and Delma Bryant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
