Mrs. Betty Jane Taylor King, 91, of Mt. Airy passed away Sunday morning, November 18, 2018, at her home. She was born in Surry County on October 28, 1927 to the late Arthur Augustin and Susie Dell Venable Taylor. Mrs. King was retired from Surry County Schools after 20 years of teaching Home Economics where she touched the lives of many students who still remember her fondly today. She was also a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church. Mrs. King went to Copeland High School, grades 1-11, Class of 1944 Women’s College of UNC (UNCG), Class of 1952. Mrs. King enjoyed sewing, cooking, singing and square dancing. Her favorite memories come from spending time with beloved husband, Win (of 51 years), and her children and grandchildren. Her four granddaughters were the joys of her life. Mrs. King spent a large portion of her life giving back to her community as shown through her church work, her volunteering with various community organizations including The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, Girl Scouts of America, Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, and the Modern Gardeners Garden Club. Mrs. King was a giver, always putting others’ needs before her own. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Susan Beth King of Boone, Jan and Coley Burton, of Mount Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Gloria King of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Mandy Burton Brown (Phillip) of Mount Airy, Laurin Burton Mayberry (Quinn) of Wilkesboro , Taylor King Smith (Stephen), and Logan King all of Raleigh; great grandchild, Miles Coleman Brown of Mount Airy; many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors; special caregivers from River Oaks Homeplace Care - Angie Mastin and her daughter, Kalyca, Amy Mills Heath, Angelique Cain; caregivers/staff at Ridgecrest, Home Instead care givers, especially Kelsey Pelfrey. In addition to her parents, Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred A. King, sisters, Irene Taylor Darnell, Thelma Taylor Shackleford, Gailya “Gaye” Taylor Hinshaw, Muriel Taylor; brothers, Arthur J. Taylor, Wilbur Taylor, Billy Taylor, Ben Stone Taylor, Julian Taylor. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 23, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Daniel V. Miller officiating, with visitation one hour prior to the service in the Ladies’ Parlor. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy is serving the King family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030, Central United Methodist Church, 1909 N. Main St., Mt.
