Mrs. Betty Lou Newman Marshall, 73, of Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 15, 2012, from her home, surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Marshall was born May 21, 1939, in Surry County, to the late Walter Wendell and Ocie Virginia Tickle Newman. She celebrated life to the fullest, traveling to places all around the world. She put herself through school earning a GED. After learning cosmetology, she taught it to others, participated in several hair shows in New York, and was even a judge for some hair shows. She loved children and was the owner/operator of a home daycare center in Alexandria, VA, for several years. Mrs. Marshall was a member of Union Hill Friends Meeting. She is survived by her husband, Junior Marshall of the home; a son and his fiancée, Gary Marshall and Cynthia Hilsinger of Alexandria, VA; a daughter and her fiancé, Stephanie Marshall and Richard Lucas of Chantilly, VA; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Bliss of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Nicholas Marshall and his wife, Sally, of Wilkesboro, Morgan Marshall and Jake Marshall, both of Alexandria, VA, and Daijah Lucas of Chantilly, VA; and three great-grandchildren, Keila Marshall, Austin Marshall, and Logan Eller, all of Wilkesboro. Mrs. Marshall is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Dennis Payne of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Newman of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Newman of Mount Airy; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special niece, Denise Adkins of Siloam; special cousins, Lucy Harris and Lewis Collins, both of Mount Airy; and a special friend, the Rev. Fonda Younger of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by a son, Richard Allen Marshall; a brother, Walter Bobby Newman; a special nephew, Michael Newman; two other nephews, Donnie Newman and Billy Newman; and an infant niece, Linda Marie Newman. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Kevin Wilson and the Rev. Fonda Younger officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers, Ruth Handy, Carolyn Spraker, Lois Edwards, Rosa Dizon, Emily Leftwich, and the Rev. Kevin Wilson, for the care and support given to the family. They would also like to thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, the family would like for donations in Mrs. Marshall's memory be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.
