On Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 2021, Mrs. Betty Jean McBride Wood, 81, of Mount Airy, gained her sight as the Lord called her home from Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. After suffering from retinitis pigmentosa for many years, her vision was made whole and she can now see vivid, glorious colors and faces of loved ones who had gone on before. Mrs. Wood was born November 9, 1939, in Surry County, the younger of two daughters born to the late Carl McBride and Gladys Jeanette Haynes McBride Johnson. As a child, Betty was reared in Mount Airy and attended Mount Airy High School. In December 1957, Betty married Kirby Eldon Wood, and together they were a vital part of the Woodville community for 63 years. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family and was the source of ceaseless support to her husband and son. Betty was the former manager of Family Dollar in Toast and was the co-owner of Wood’s Mobile Home Park and Wood Properties. She was well known for the delicious cakes and pies that she delighted in cooking or baking for family and friends. Her loved ones considered her to be one of the sweetest, most humble, and toughest women anywhere around. Through many health challenges and losses in her life, she fought the fight with every ounce of her soul and pressed forward. With her many talents and gifts, sharing her love with others was effortless as she always greeted everyone with her warm smile. Mrs. Wood was a longtime member of Woodville Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Kirby Eldon Wood; a son, Alan Wood and his wife, Barbara, who Betty considered as the daughter that she never had; two nieces, Pamela Arnason and her husband, Terry, and Norma Hawks; two nephews, Jim Edwards and his wife, Cheri, and Preston Hill; several great-nieces and great-nephews; along with her caregivers, Elizabeth Brendle, Delma Bryant, Karen Lewis, Diane Walker, and Judith Whitaker, who provided love, compassion, and tender care on a daily basis during Betty’s final days at home. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by an infant son, Kevin Lee Wood; and a sister, Lillie Irene McBride Edwards. A graveside service of worship and celebration of Betty’s life will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Kilby officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Zelda Collins, 1591 Toms Creek Church Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
