Betty Jean Smith

Mrs. Betty Jean Rakes Smith, age 84, of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018, at the Woltz Hospice Home.  Mrs. Smith was born in Surry County on May 22, 1934, to Larkin and Beatrice DePalma Rakes.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother who will be dearly missed by all her family and many friends. Mrs. Smith was also a charter member of Temple Baptist Church, having taught Sunday school for over 40 Years. Among the many who will always cherish her sweet memory is her devoted husband of 67 years, James A. Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Delma Beck, Robin and Roger Thomas, and Cindy and Greg Hiatt; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Steve and Janie Smith, and Mark and Debbie Smith; seven grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and one great- great grandchild; sisters and a brother-in-law, Wanda and Bill Allen, and Ruth Francis.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.  The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 13, 2018, at Temple Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev. Zane Fishel and Rev. Steve Smith.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  The family request that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home 945 Zephyr Rd, Dobson, NC 27017.
