Mrs. Betty Jean Woodruff Southern, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022, at her home. Mrs. Southern was born July 8, 1930, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Andrew Click and Bessie Lee Coe Woodruff. Betty retired as the owner and operator of Southern Upholstery and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 75 years. She faithfully served the church in many roles, including a Girls in Action leader, Women’s Missionary Union leader, and Sunday school teacher. Additionally, Betty served as a volunteer with the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary for many years. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Henry Edwards of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Beth Southern of Greenville, SC; six grandchildren, Jeremy Miller of Asheville, Joshua Miller and Jonathan Mabe, both of Mount Airy, Dr. Joseph Miller of Winston-Salem, Hannah Southern of Greenville, SC, and Nathan Southern of Spartanburg, SC; five stepgrandchildren, Nina Byrd, Crystal Brindle, Tommy Edwards, Wayne Edwards, and Alan Edwards; several great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Annie Lee Page of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Norma and Archie Haynes and Sandra and Jimmy Byrd, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Southern was preceded in death by her husband, Golie Young Southern; four sisters, Dorothy Lawrence Branch, Edna Easter, Mary Ruth Riggs Cooper, and Retha Mae Quesinberry; and a brother, Frank Woodruff. A service of worship and celebration of Betty’s life will be held Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex Martin, the Rev. Tony Holder, the Rev. Dale Wallace, and the Rev. Grant Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a church of your choice; or Shriners Hospitals for Children, P.O. Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
