Mrs. Betty Marie Draughn Hiatt Whitaker, 77, of Dobson, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born September 10, 1932, in Surry County, to the late Tyre Shepherd and Amelia Slaydon Draughn. Mrs. Draughn was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She had worked at Lynne Hosiery and Quality Mills in previous years. Mrs. Whitaker is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra Cromer and Rosalie and Ronald Dickens, all of Lowgap, and Sharon and Ralph Freeman of Dobson; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Josie Wilder of Dobson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbur Sanders Hiatt; her second husband, Calvin Edward Whitaker; sisters, Fanny Draughn, Bertie Marion, Emily Angel, Gracie Forrest, and Bessie Branch; brothers, Leonard Draughn, Lester Draughn, Dallas Draughn, Nathan Draughn, Sid Draughn, and Ed Draughn. The funeral service will be held Monday, September, 14, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Ted Crotts and the Rev. Ray Hutson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dobson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 13, 2009, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at the home of her daughter, Sharon Freeman, 1006 Hodges Mill Road, Dobson.
