Mrs. Billie Mae Harrell Vass Davis, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018. Mrs. Davis was born January 31, 1936, in Surry County, the oldest of two daughters born to the late Hadley Albert and Pearl Ethel Atkins Harrell. Billie Mae graduated from White Plains School in 1953. Following her graduation, she worked at Spencer’s Inc. for 21 years and Lamb Drug Company for 10 years. Later, she served as a tour guide for the Gilmer Smith Foundation. Billie Mae was a member of Sky View Missionary Baptist Church in Fancy Gap, VA, and faithfully attended Union Hill Friends Meeting. She is survived by a brother-in-law and his wife, Dr. James F. and Marcia Childress of Charlottesville, VA; two nephews, Albert Franklin Childress of Encinitas, CA, and James Frederic Childress of Riverdale, MD; two great-nieces, Anna Childress of London, England, and Ella Childress of Riverdale, MD; two great-nephews, Ian Childress of New York, NY, and Eric Childress of Riverdale, MD; several “Vass” nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Gwelda Puckett Shelton and Willa Dean Bowman, both of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her first husband, Carlos Owen Vass; her second husband, Donald Lester Davis; and a sister, Georgia Harrell Childress. A service of worship and celebration of Billie Mae’s life will be held Friday, December 21, 2018, at 12:00 PM at White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. Fonda Younger and the Rev. Wendell Horton officiating. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
