Mr. Billy Robert Barr age 72 of Mount Airy, husband of Jill Laughridge Barr, passed away at his home on Monday September 4, 2006. Mr. Barr was born in Stokes County on October 8, 1933 son of the late George Abram Barr and Beulah Irene Boles Barr. Mr. Barr was a graduate of King High School where he played Basketball and Baseball; he was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean War. After his tour of duty Mr. Barr graduated from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi and was a member of the Deacon Baseball Team; He taught and was head basketball coach at Walkertown High School, He received his masters degree from Appalachian State University and was an assistant baseball coach there. After graduating from Appalachian State University Mr. Barr resided in Murfreesboro where he was a guidance director and Principal in the Hertford County School System. Mr. Barr graduated with honors from The University of North Carolina Law School where he was on the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif; He was an assistant baseball coach for the Tarheels while in Law School. He practiced law in Tampa, FL. over 20 years in the law firm of Fowler & White and Barr, Murman & Tonelli After moving back to North Carolina he was a partner in Babb and Barr Law firm in Winston-Salem, and later had his own private practice in Mt. Airy. Mr. Barr was a 32nd degree Mason with the Hillsborough Lodge #25 AF & AM, and was a member of the Eqypt Temple Shriners in Tampa, FL. Surviving include his wife, Mrs. Jill Laughridge Barr of the home; a daughter, Laura Lynn Barr of Westfield; two grandchildren, Christopher Robert Eakin of Greensboro and Michael Charles Siner; of Westfield, a sister and brother-in-law, Doris Barr Grove and husband Dr. Arthur S. Grove of Boston, MA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott and Phyllis Barr of King, Charlie and Sue Barr of South Dakota and Linda Bare of Pilot Mountain, many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many close friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barr was preceded in death by a granddaughter Carolina Barr Eakin, a sister Judy Barr Hemrick, by three brothers, George Hayes Barr, Jack Barr and Joseph Roosevelt Barr and by his mother and father-in-law Vernon and Grace Laughridge. The family will receive friends Wednesday night 6 to 9 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. A memorial service will be held Thursday September 7, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Mountain View Baptist Church in King, NC. with services conducted by Rev. Paul Norman; the family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall of the church. The family will receive friends at there home at 834 Reeves Rd. Mt. Airy at other times.
