Billy "Bruce" McCoy

Mr. Billy “Bruce” McCoy, 83, of Elkin, North Carolina passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

He was born September 4, 1940, to the late William and Lucile Saunders McCoy in Cherokee County, North Carolina. 

Mr. McCoy served his country while being enlisted in the Navy, and the National Guard. 

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam war, achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class,

and earned the Vietnam Service Medal.

He spent time in the Desert Storm conflict while serving in the NC National Guard.

He retired from the military with 27 years of combined service.

Mr. McCoy worked for several years as a computer programmer, with previous work experience as 

a bank loan officer. 

He was a man of many hobbies. He enjoyed making homemade whiskey and wine.

He loved to use his HAM Radio, (handle K4JGR), and enjoyed talking to people all over the world

Mr. McCoy was fascinated with aircraft and the ability to take flight, and one of his favorite hobbies was to build and 

fly model airplanes. He was a member of the model airplane club in Franklin, North Carolina.

He also enjoyed geneological research, and learning more about his McCoy ancestry.

Mr. McCoy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Grandmaster of his Masonic Lodge in 

Brookneal, Virginia.

He is suvived by his long-term significate other, Morgan Zito; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Chad Clark; 

sons and daughters-in-law, Joel McCoy and Heather Miller, and David and Araceli McCoy.

Mr. McCoy had two grandchildren Mikenzie Phillips and Kortney Owens, and three great-grandchildren, Travis and Sloan Phillips, 

and Tallulah Owens.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Newman McCoy; and brother, Jim McCoy. 

There will be no visitation or service. 

Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson, North Carolina is serving the McCoy Family.
