Mr. Billy Erastus Blaine Campbell, 77, of 541 Simpson Road, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, February 5, 2007, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville. Mr. Campbell was born November 18, 1929, in Yadkin County, the fifth child born to the late Erastus Blaine and Fannie Evans Campbell. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Billy was a member of the VFW Post 2019 of Mount Airy and a member of the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. Billy's lifelong passion was farming. He farmed and also worked at FCX, Rainbow Farm Center, and Kasco for many years. Mr. Campbell was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church for 50 years. During his service to the Lord, he served as deacon, a Sunday school teacher for 40 years, and a Sunday school superintendent. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Irene Atkins Campbell of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Sawyers of Mount Airy, Cheryl and Ken Story of Winston-Salem, and Kathy and Tim Creed of Siloam; six grandchildren and spouses, Beth and Brian Gossett of Winston-Salem, Trevis and Wendy Sawyers of Mount Airy, Chris Layton of Wilmington, Jon Layton and fiancee, Andrea Harrison, of Winston-Salem, Sgt. Bryan Creed of Camp Hovey, South Korea, and Amanda Creed of Myrtle Beach, SC; three great grandchildren, Melissa Gossett, Lazarus Gossett, and Brian Gossett, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Rowena Macemore and Edna Jane Roof, both of Hamptonville; a brother, Dovin Campbell of Hamptonville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Wagoner, Ruby Stokes, and Nola Brown; and a brother, Earl Campbell. A service to celebrate Billy's life will be held Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 2:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kermit L. Gray, Rev. Todd E. Byrd, and the Rev. Stewart R. Mauck. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Piney Grove Baptist Church, c/o Garnett Beasley, 1626 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Universal Healthcare Center in King and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Amy Nowlin, Melissa Reynolds, Donna Paul, and Michelle Bradwell, for their love, care, and support during Billy's illness.
