Mr. Billy Edward Carter, 70, of 836 Haystack Road, Mount Airy, who was in declining health for the past 2 1/2 years, lost his battle to Lou Gerhig's Disease at his home at 3:46 am Tuesday, November 18, 2008. Mr. Carter was born May 27, 1938, in Surry County, to Edward Arlo and Savannah Elizabeth Martin Carter. Mr. Carter was a well-known carpenter, who dearly loved his work. He loved to deer hunt and riding in the mountains looking for deer. He also loved watching NFL football. Mr. Carter served our country in the United States Army. He leaves behind a wife of 49 years, Barbara Lee Murray Carter; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Brenda Creed, Sandy and the Rev. Randy Edwards, and Patsy and Brian Bowman, all of Mount Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Doug and Melissa Carter and Wade Carter and friend, April Gravley, all of Lambsburg, VA; grandchildren, Mickey Creed and wife, Melinda, Pepper Galyean and husband, Chris, Josh Edwards and wife, Keshia, Charity Edwards and husband, Jeff, Jace Bowman, Brooke Bowman, Haley Carter, Macy Carter, Ethen Carter, and Colby Luckado; stepgrandchild, Maggie Wood; great-grandchildren, Christopher Galyean, Victoria Creed, Harley Creed, and Isaiah Edwards; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen and Gilbert Easter and Essie Easter, all of Mount Airy; a brother, Ray Carter of Pilot Mountain; eight nieces and nephews; special caregivers, June Parker and Hollie Griffith; and special neighbors and friends, Donald and Teresa Moseley, Bill and Gail Patton, and Buddy and Joan Edwards In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Mae Carter; and two brothers, Clyde Lane Carter and Johnny Howard Carter. The funeral service will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Randy Edwards, the Rev. Tommy Nichols, and the Rev. Todd E. Byrd, and burial will follow in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation, P.O. Box 96, Natick, MA 01760, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
