Billy Gray Hawks

Mr. Billy Gray Hawks, 75, of 144 Lowe Road, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at Northern Hospital of Surry County after a short illness. Mr. Hawks was born February 8, 1931, in Surry County, to Fannie Lowe Hawks Ramey and the late Elmer Hawks. He served our country in the United States Navy following the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hawks was a retired insurance adjuster and a member of Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Greylynn and Michael Holbrook of Dobson and Haley and Jason Cassell of Mount Airy; two sons, Danny Hawks of Mount Airy and Stewart Hawks of the home; three granddaughters and spouses, Michelle and Justin Burcham of Lowgap, and Jennifer and Jimmy Morton and Chesney Cassell, all of Mount Airy; three grandsons and a spouse, Richard and Crystal Hawks of Lowgap and Keiton Cassell and Canaan Cassell, both of Mount Airy; a great granddaughter, Alicia Burcham of Lowgap; his mother, Fannie Lowe Hawks Ramey of Mount Airy; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Glenda and Marvin Beasley and Judy and Jerry Lowe, all of Mount Airy; a special cousin, Helen Hawks Watson of Mount Airy; and a host of special friends. In addition to his father, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Lawson Hawks; and a daughter-in-law, Norma Hull Hawks. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 30, 2006, at 11:00 AM at Ivy Green Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Lester Bryant, and burial will follow in the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. No formal visitation will be held; however, the family may be contacted at 131 Lowe Road, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o David Puckett, 326 Puckett Farm Trail, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
