Billy Gray Lawson

Mr. Billy Gray Lawson, age 71, of Pilot Mountain passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was born in Surry County on January 9, 1950, to the late Elmer and Brooksie Wilson Lawson. Billy was a gentle soul, an outdoorsman who appreciated nature, and the peacefulness of a quiet walk in the woods. He was an avid hunter who respected wildlife and bonded with nature like no other. He was a loving mentor, teaching the young men in his life so much about hunting, fishing and how to grow into manhood. He was a supportive husband, loving father, brother, and a loyal friend to so many. He was “Poppy” to his grandchildren and all the little ones that he loved so much. He had so many special qualities. He will be dearly missed. As we walk through the woods, we will think of him and know that his spirit will always be with us. Remember his laughter. Remember his smile. Remember his love. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 35 years, Lois McCraw Lawson; a daughter, Evelyn “Hope” Vaught; grandchildren, Matthew Vaught, Chase Vaught, Kaleigh Vaught; sisters and brothers-in-law, Geneva and Jim Johnson, Shirley and Bob Wright, Sue and Ron Sumner, Cindy and David Miller; brothers and sisters-in-law, Coy and Katie Lawson, Richard and Barbara Lawson, Dean and Eileen Lawson, Terry and Susie Lawson; special loved ones, Reese Smith, Hailey Smith, and Timmy Wendorf. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by a brother, David Allen Lawson. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM with Pastor Ricky Rogers and Pastor Elmo Hiatt officiating. Burial will follow in the McCraw Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 18, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
