Mr. Burlie L. Bowman, 94, of Cana, VA passed away at his home Sunday, December 2, 2018. He was born in Carroll County VA July 27, 1924 to the late Ellis B. and Dossie Minnie Iroler Bowman. Mr. Bowman bravely served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in Rhineland and Southern France, and being one of only two that survived in the Belmont Sector attempting to break the German lines. Mr. Bowman received several medals including a Bronze Star and WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Bowman was a charter member of the Cana Volunteer Fire Department and served as assistant Fire Chief. He retired from the Carroll County School System as he continued to farm and operate an orchard. Mr. Bowman started B and B Produce working along with his father to sell the produce they grew. He assisted with the first Boy Scout Troop in Cana, encouraging the boy’s attendance and advancement of the ranks. Mr. Bowman is survived by his devoted wife of almost 70 years, Wilma L. Strickland Bowman; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jimmy Webb; sons and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Anita Bowman and Gary Bowman; grandchildren and spouses, Jamie Webb, Jason and Kristin Webb, Julie and Rick Hughes, Stacey and Jeff Bolen, Crystal Bowman, and Samantha and Tyler Cannaday; great grandchildren, Elizabeth , Riley, Katherine, Mitchell, Dalton, Charles, Eleanor and Joey; a sister, Ethel Goad; sister-in-law, Jean; and a brother-in-law, Freeman Bowman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Susan L. Bowman; a sister, Freida Bowman; and a brother, Murphy Bowman. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday December 5, 2018 at Rocky Ford Christian Church with Rev. Billy Moore and George Randall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 12:30 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
