Mr. Burlie Edward Hawks, age 81 of Cana, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at his home. Mr. Hawks was born in Carroll County, April 1, 1926 to Mamie Elsie Hawks. He served our country in the United States Army during WWII and was a retired farmer. Surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Lona and Ronnie Freeman of Booneville; Mona and Eldon Lyons of Cana; Debbie and Billy Johnston of Dobson; Fernita and Bill Hutchens of Hamptonville; Sherry Hawks of Mt. Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Joyce Hawks of Mt. Airy; Calvin and Doris Hawks of Pilot Mountain; Leon and Helen Hawks of Cana; Ronnie and Ruby Hawks also of Cana; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. In addition to his wife, Annie Marie Hawks and his mother, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Amanda Hutchens and Ashley Freeman and by a half brother, Barnie Hawks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church, where his body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Services will be conducted by Elder Arwood Edwards, Elder Joey Jenkins and Rev. Ray Hawks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by Grover King VFW Post 1115. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Burlie Hawks fund c/o Sherry Hawks, P.O.
