Mr. Burney Ray Tilley, 89, of Cana, VA, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family, Friday, September 3, 2021. He was born in Surry County, October 17, 1931, to the late Paul and Lessie Easter Tilley. Mr. Tilley bravely served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He continued to show his Patriotism throughout his life by serving as a life member of the Grover King VFW Post 1115. Mr. Tilley was a dedicated member of the VFW Honor Guard and served as Post Surgeon for many years. He retired from the N.C. Granite Quarry after 40 years and was a member of New Charity Church. Mr. Tilley was a loving husband, father, grandfather; and a wonderful friend and neighbor. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith Hall Tilley; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Brian Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Tilley; grandchildren, Brittany Cook and Benjamin, Jordan Jones, Andi Gammons and Brian, Holly Cockerham, Olivia Thompson and Brandon, and Nathan Thompson and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Chevy Jones, Destiny Penn, Levi Gammons, Layla Gammons, Bentley Thompson, Sidney Thompson, Addie Thompson, and Milly Thompson; sisters, Marie Cook and Anna Ruth Rakes; a brother, James Tilley; several nieces and nephews; and by special friends, Eddie and Helen Vaughn. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tilley was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Ray Tilley; and a great-granddaughter, Jenna Gammons; sisters, Pauline Dowell, Pernie Thompson, Clara Towe, Gladys Tilley, Magdalene Jones, and Margie Vaughn; and a brother, Clinton Tilley. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hank Robertson officiating. Burial will follow at Solid Rock Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors by the Grover King VFW Post 1115 of Hillsville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
