Mr. Burnie Ray Slate age 90 of 922 Spring Street, Mt. Airy, NC died Friday, July 13, 2007 at his home. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife of 68 years, Audrey and his four children, Joan, Nancy, Sam and Patsy. Born January 21, 1917 in Asbury, NC, he was preceded in death by his father, the late Ed Slate and mother, the late Lydia Lee Rogers Slate, brothers, Melvin, Cecil, Luther, Bobby, Osby, Thomas, Ray, Marion and Grady, and sisters, Lula Jessup, Gertha Nunn, Inez Creed and Thadie Badgett. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Audrey Shelton Slate, children, Joan and L.J. Williams, Mt. Airy, Nancy and Jim Moore, Wrightsville Beach, Sam Slate, Lewisville, Patsy and Bill Burke, Burlington: grandchildren, Layne Barber of Raleigh, Keith Barber, Wilmington, Susan and Skip Fox, Huntersville, Meade and Amir Dadkhah of Charlotte, Leigh and Jamie Royce, Austin, TX, John and Keyna Williams, of Mooresville, Emily Orange of Mt. Airy, 12 great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Slate, Mt. Airy. A successful businessman, he joined his brother, Grady at Slate Motor Company in 1951. Prior to that time, he partnered with brothers Cecil, Bob, and Osby in Slate Brothers Warehouse of Stoneville. An active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy, he taught Sunday School for 28 years and also served as a deacon. The funeral will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, July 15, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy. The Dr. Roger B. Gilbert will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 PM Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy, 714 North Main Street, Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. And he said unto me, It is done, I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of water of life freely.(Revelations 21:6).
