Mr. Caleb Archie Barker, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday morning, May 11, 2013, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Barker was born August 12, 1918, in Surry County, the son of the late James "Jim" and Maude Ethel Rule Barker. Archie served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He owned and operated Canteen in Downtown Mount Airy for more than 60 years and was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Reeves Barker of Mount Airy; a daughter, Mae Margaret Barker of Mount Airy; a special nephew, Doug Reeves; a special niece, Maudie Ramsey; his extended family, Donna Hiatt and Kandis and Mike Seivers; and special friends, Don and Polly Paton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barker was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Ramsey and Katherine Ausburn; and a brother, Bill Barker. A graveside service will be held Monday, May 13, 2013, at 2:30 PM at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Harry Sherrill and the Rev. Jack Danley officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Central Continuing Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockford Street United Methodist Church, 520 Rockford Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
